California drought begins to bite, undermining the successful US success story

A punishing drought - and the unprecedented measures the state announced last week to compel people to reduce water consumption - is forcing a reconsideration of whether the aspiration of untrammeled growth that has for so long been this state's driving engine has run against the limits of nature. The 25 percent cut in water consumption ordered by Gov. Jerry Brown raises fundamental questions about what life in California will be like in the years ahead... more

California needs more big storms to beat drought

Despite the heavy storm that hit California last week – complete with flooded creeks and mudslides, closed highways and downed trees – it will take a lot more of the same to end the drought. In fact, experts say it may take five or six more storms like it to consider the drought over. The state needs a lot more storms – and cold ones – to assure there’s enough snowmelt to meet water demand next summer. more

Depleting the Water – 60 Minutes Groundwater Story

Lesley Stahl reports on disturbing new evidence that our planet's groundwater is being pumped out much faster than it can be replenished. Water experts say groundwater is like a savings account -- something you draw on in times of need. But savings accounts need to be replenished, and there is new evidence that so much water is being taken out, much of the world is in danger of a groundwater overdraft. Lesley Stahl: Will there be a time when there is zero water in the aquifer for people in California? Jay Famiglietti (an Earth sciences professor at the University of California, Irvine, is a leading expert on groundwater) : Unless we take action, yes. more

Alarm as almond farms consume California’s water

Extreme drought and soaring global demand is threatening supplies of one of the world's favourite snacks.  Touted as the ultimate superfood and an essential ingredient in everything from mezze to marzipan: the humble almond has never been so popular. But with prices at a nine-year high, almonds are in the frontline of a battle over water as California struggles to cope with one of its worst-ever droughts – stoking fears of an almond shortage over Christmas. more

Drought causes California to fall short of record almond harvest predictions

The Californian almond harvest has fallen short of forecasts which predicted the largest season ever. The US state produces 80 per cent of the world's almonds, but is in one of the worst droughts in its history. As a result, there have been irrigation cutbacks and that's one reason yields are down on expectations.  President and CEO of the Almond Board of California, Richard Waycott, says there are concerns about the ongoing effects of the drought.  I'd say most growers are thinking the actual harvest will be something below the official estimate. Richard Waycott, President and CEO of the Almond Board of California. more

Eating nuts linked to healthier, longer life

Move over, apples: A handful of nuts a day keeps the doctor away—and might help you live longer, according to new results from two long-running Harvard studies. “We found that people who ate nuts every day lived longer, healthier lives than people who didn’t eat nuts,” said study co-author Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. The report, in tomorrow’s New England Journal of Medicine, showed that daily nut-eaters were less likely to die of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease. Overall, the daily nut-eaters were 20% less likely to have died during the course of the study than those who avoided nuts. more

The rise of the American almond craze in one nutty chart

America has a new favorite nut. The country's appetite for almonds has grown by more than 220 percent since 2005--far faster than demand for pecans, walnuts, macadamias, pistachios, cashews, or peanuts. The rise is even more startling when compared to the early 1970s, when the average American ate just over a quarter of a pound of almonds per year. Now they consume more than two pounds per year. America's love affair with almonds is such that not even peanuts can compete anymore. In 2012 Americans ate more almonds per capita than shelled and unshelled snack peanuts combined (not including peanut butter). more

Satellite study reveals parched U.S. west using up underground water

A new study by NASA and University of California, Irvine, scientists finds more than 75 percent of the water loss in the drought-stricken Colorado River Basin since late 2004 came from underground resources. The extent of groundwater loss may pose a greater threat to the water supply of the western United States than previously thought. “We don't know exactly how much groundwater we have left, so we don't know when we're going to run out," said Stephanie Castle, a water resources specialist at the University of California, Irvine, and the study's lead author. "This is a lot of water to lose. We thought that the picture could be pretty bad, but this was shocking.” "The Colorado River Basin is the water lifeline of the western United States," said Famiglietti. "With Lake Mead at its lowest level ever, we wanted to explore whether the basin, like most other regions around the world, was relying on groundwater to make up for the limited surface-water supply. We found a surprisingly high and long-term reliance on groundwater to bridge the gap between supply and demand. more

The snow levels in the Sierra were only 18 percent of average on Thursday, when the last of the season's once-a-month measurements was taken by the California Department of Water Resources. California drought will only get worse, experts say

California is probably headed into a deeper drought this summer, making it harder to escape in the future, an expert says. With more than 80% of the state in an extreme drought, dry conditions will probably continue and won't improve much in the next few months, said climatologist Brian Fuchs of the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska. more
